Aralumallige – Blossoming of the jasmine

Aralumallige is a small town (Truly I have no clue as to how big it is. Clear images are not yet available on Google Map) in the vicinity of Doddabalapura of  Bengaluru  Rural  district.  Although this is  a small town, the  name of this place has  traveled the world owing  to the famous scholar Aralumallige Parthasarathi. It is a matter of jubilation that this place has acquired repute due to one of our very own. But if you learn about the backdrop of the reason behind this town earning that name, you are bound to feel euphoric. Yes! It is an extremely fascinating episode of devotion.

His Holiness Shri Suvidyendra Theertha Shripaadangal who was conferred with the honorary title of “Ajnanatimiramaartaanda – dispeller of ignorance” related this incident 8 – 10 years ago in his discourse at Mantralaya.

Gurusarvabhouma Shri Raghavendra Theertha’s Guru Shri Sudheendra Theertha visited this place as per his travel itinerary. It was dusk when he arrived. Before Swamiji proceeded from this village, he was desirous of visiting and viewing the Mukhyaprana shrine consecrated by Shri Vyasaraja at a place close-by. When he visited, flowers were unavailable to be offered to Pranadevaru. Since he had a strong desire to offer flowers, Swamiji submitted the jasmine buds made of gold that he had with him to Pranadevaru, sang his glories and proceeded to stay at the village. The following morning a unique spectacle was witnessed by devotees at the Mukhyaprana shrine. The golden jasmine buds offered by Shri Sudheendra Theertha the previous evening blossomed and were effusing a fragrant aroma! The buds offered by Sudheendra Theertha with utmost devotion were wholeheartedly accepted by Lord Mukhyaprana. The devotees who were amazed and joyous upon witnessing this occurrence of intense devotion and love began calling this village “Aralumallige” meaning blossoming of the jasmine.

This epitomizes the greatness of Shri Sudheendra Theertha Shripaadangal’s devotion and the zenith of compassion Pranadevaru has towards his devotees. The priest currently offering worship there may have additional information pertaining to this incident. I should visit as soon as possible and find out.

Note: The picture displayed at the beginning of this article is not that of Aralumallige. I have sourced it from the National Geographic website.
